This week we are highlighting Michels Utility Services, Inc. Michels Utility Services installed 2,800 feet (about the height of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world) of 20-inch natural gas pipeline in two separate runs under the 10th Avenue Bridge during a bridge reconstruction project to serve the University of Minnesota campus. The pipelines were spaced 28 inches apart and mounted to custom-made hangers on the underside of the bridge. The crews worked on an 8-foot-wide catwalk beneath the bridge to weld and wrap two steel pipelines. Extensive training and safety equipment were needed to ensure safety on the catwalk, which had a capacity limit of seven people at a time.

SAFTEY TIPS

We all love a good grill day! Here are a few tips on how to be safe while using a grill:

  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the metal itself and in trays below the grill.
  • Make sure your grill is located on a flat, level surface.
  • Check your grill for leaks. If you store your grill inside during the winter months, it’s important to check it over thoroughly when grilling season begins.
  • Never leave your grill unattended while in use.

FUN FACT

Giraffes hum to communicate with each other. It’s thought that the low-frequency humming could be a form of "contact call" between individuals who have been separated from their herd, helping them to find each other in the dark. Some researchers think they sleep talk too.
